Caminito del Rey in 2026: The Booking Decides the Day

The Caminito del Rey runs on timed tickets, one direction and a shuttle between the ends. Here is how to book it and build the Malaga day around it.

The Caminito del Rey used to be famous as the most dangerous walkway in the world.

Now it is famous as one of the most organised.

The boardwalk pinned to the walls of the El Chorro gorge, a metre wide and around a hundred metres above the river, reopened in 2015 after a full rebuild, and the wild years ended there. Today the Caminito runs on timed tickets, a single walking direction and a mandatory helmet handed to you at the entrance.

None of that makes it tame.

It makes it bookable, which is a different thing.

One direction, one clock

The route is linear, not a loop.

You walk north to south: in from the Ardales side, out at El Chorro. Your ticket carries an entry time, and the system feeds walkers into the gorge in waves so the boardwalk never becomes a queue suspended over a river.

The full experience, access paths included, is around seven to eight kilometres of walking and roughly three hours door to door. The famous suspended sections are a fraction of that, but they are the fraction your memory will keep.

Helmets are provided and required. This is not theatre. You are on a shelf bolted to a cliff.

The shuttle is part of the route

Because the walk is one-way, the day has a geometry problem, and the shuttle bus solves it.

The bus connects the two ends of the gorge, so the standard plan is: park at one end, walk the Caminito, ride the shuttle back to the car. Travellers without a car have a genuinely good option here: El Chorro has a railway station with connections towards Malaga, which makes this one of the few great gorge walks in Europe reachable by train.

Decide the logistics when you book, not on the morning.

The ticket hour, the parking side and the shuttle are one decision wearing three hats.

Book before you dream

In season, the Caminito sells out days and sometimes weeks ahead.

The tickets are released through the official platform, with general entry and guided options. If the official calendar shows nothing for your dates, guided tours from Malaga sometimes hold allocations, at a price that includes the transport problem being solved for you.

What does not work is arriving at the gorge with optimism.

There is no negotiating window at the entrance, and the nearest alternative to a missing ticket is a very beautiful drive home.

Weather has veto power

The gorge is spectacular because it is exposed, and exposed places keep their own counsel.

Strong wind or rain can close the walkway with little notice, for the obvious reason that a metre-wide boardwalk on a cliff face is not where anyone should meet a storm. Build the day with margin: do not stack the Caminito against a flight, and keep a plan B in the area.

Ardales, the lakes at El Chorro and the reservoirs nearby can absorb a redirected day with no drama.

Who should think twice

The rebuilt Caminito is safe, wide enough and fenced, but it is honest about heights.

The minimum age is eight, and the rule exists for good reasons. Travellers with serious vertigo should look at photographs of the glass balcony and the hanging bridge before booking, not after. Everyone else needs closed shoes, water, sun protection and the ability to walk three hours without ceremony.

This is a walkway, not a via ferrata. The drama is visual, not athletic.

That is exactly why it works for so many people.

What to avoid

Avoid arriving without a ticket.

Avoid ignoring the one-way logistics until the morning.

Avoid sandals, umbrellas and anything that needs two hands.

Avoid stacking the walk against a tight afternoon commitment.

Avoid bringing a fear of heights as a surprise.

Most of all, avoid confusing organised with ordinary. The gorge did not get smaller. The management got better.
