Best time to visit Italy: it depends where you are going.
There is no single best time to visit Italy. The right month depends on whether you want cities, coast, lakes or countryside, and on how much heat and crowd you are willing to take.
Italy is a long country with very different climates from the Alps to Sicily. A perfect week on the Amalfi Coast and a perfect week in Rome do not always fall in the same month. The most useful way to think about timing is by what you want to do.
As a general rule, late spring and early autumn give the best balance of weather, light and space almost everywhere.
Spring and the shoulder seasons
April to early June and September to October are the sweet spots for most of Italy.
The weather is warm but not punishing, the light is beautiful, and the worst of the crowds and prices have eased. This is the ideal window for cities, the lakes, the countryside and walking, and it is when Italy is at its most comfortable.

Summer, and where to take it
July and August are hot, busy and expensive, especially in the cities and on the famous coast.
If you travel in high summer, lean towards the coast and the lakes rather than inland cities, which can be draining in the heat. Book well ahead, expect crowds at the headline sights, and plan slower days. Mid-August is the Italian holiday peak and the busiest time of all.
Autumn and winter
Late autumn and winter are quieter and can be lovely for cities, food and lower prices.
Rome, Florence and Venice are atmospheric and far less crowded, though some coastal and lake resorts wind down from November to around Easter. Winter is also the season for the Alps and the Dolomites. For a city and food trip, the cooler months are underrated.
