Bari to Matera by Train: Rail Service Returns on 31 August 2026
Rail travel between Bari and Matera resumes on 31 August 2026 after summer works. Weekday trains, Sunday replacement buses and the two airport options.
Trains between Bari and Matera return to their normal route today, but that does not mean every journey is a single direct train or that the railway operates seven days a week.
From Monday 31 August 2026, Ferrovie Appulo Lucane has reopened the section between Bari Centrale and Grumo Appula. The reopening restores the complete railway corridor from Bari towards Altamura, Gravina and Matera after the final phase of the summer works.
The practical consequence is that travellers can once again start the journey at Bari Centrale FAL rather than using the temporary replacement bus for the first section. The current timetable still requires careful reading, particularly at Altamura and on Sundays or public holidays.

What changed on 31 August
The railway between Bari and Gravina was interrupted in stages during summer 2026. The closure began on 22 June to allow infrastructure work, with the Altamura to Matera Sud section continuing to operate separately. The Grumo Appula to Gravina section reopened on 3 August, while the final Bari Centrale to Grumo Appula section reopened on 31 August.
The works included extraordinary maintenance, infrastructure upgrades and activity connected with the double-track underground section at Modugno. The operator stated that reopening the final section would restore the service in force before the summer interruption.
For travellers, the useful change is simple: the temporary Bari to Grumo replacement stage is no longer part of the ordinary weekday journey.
Bari to Matera is an FAL journey, not a Trenitalia journey
Bari Centrale contains services run by several operators. A ticket or search result marked Bari Centrale does not automatically mean that every departure uses the same concourse or platform area.
The Matera route is operated by Ferrovie Appulo Lucane. Search specifically for Bari Centrale FAL and follow the FAL signs after entering the station complex.
This distinction also matters when connecting from a Trenitalia service arriving from Rome, Bologna, Milan or another Italian city. Allow enough time to leave the national railway platforms, find the FAL section and deal with tickets or luggage.
A connection of ten minutes may look possible in a journey application but leaves little protection against a delayed long-distance train or an unfamiliar station layout. A margin of at least thirty minutes is more sensible when the Bari arrival is on a separate ticket.
Does the Bari to Matera train require a change
The accurate answer is that it depends on the selected departure and on how the operator presents the linked service.
The timetable valid from 31 August lists multiple journeys in which a Bari train reaches Altamura and a second numbered service continues towards Matera a few minutes later. Arrows in the published timetable indicate the coordinated relationship between the services.
Examples in the published weekday timetable include a 05:06 departure from Bari Centrale reaching Altamura at 06:19, with the linked Matera service departing at 06:21 and reaching Matera Centrale at 06:50.
A 10:48 departure from Bari Centrale reaches Altamura at 12:04, with the linked service leaving at 12:07 and reaching Matera Centrale at 12:36. A 14:09 departure reaches Altamura at 15:22, with the associated continuation reaching Matera Centrale at 15:52.
These examples show why the route is often described differently by different booking sites. The total journey functions as a coordinated Bari to Matera itinerary, but the timetable may display two train numbers around Altamura.
Follow the itinerary shown by the operator and listen for instructions at Altamura. Do not assume that a short scheduled interval gives time to leave the station, buy food or search for another platform slowly.
How long does the journey take
Several current weekday combinations take approximately one hour and forty-five minutes from Bari Centrale to Matera Centrale. Some are slightly faster or slower depending on the stops and connection pattern.
The train is therefore practical for a Bari to Matera transfer with ordinary luggage, a two or three-night stay in Matera, a long day trip when the outward and return services align well, and a car-free Puglia and Basilicata itinerary.
It is less suitable when an international flight lands shortly before the selected departure or when the return journey is tied to the last useful service of the evening.
Which Matera station should you choose
The FAL line serves several Matera stops, including Villa Longo, Matera Centrale and Matera Sud.
Most first-time visitors staying around the urban centre will begin by searching for Matera Centrale. The correct stop still depends on the exact accommodation address. A property described as being in Matera may sit closer to Matera Sud or require a taxi regardless of the railway stop.
Check the walking route before travelling. Matera's changes of elevation, steps and stone streets can make a short distance inconvenient with large suitcases.
Do not choose Matera Sud merely because it is the final stop. Do not leave at Matera Centrale automatically when the accommodation has provided different arrival instructions.
The Sunday and public holiday problem
The most important detail in the current timetable appears in the notes: railway service is suspended on Sundays and public holidays.
On those days the operator uses replacement bus services. Its ticket information states that railway tickets may be used on the replacement buses during holiday service interruptions, but travellers must still check the separate bus schedule and boarding point.
This changes the journey in several ways. The departure point may not be beside the train platform, road traffic affects the travel time, and luggage space may be less predictable.
The route may also use different stops from the railway, which means an itinerary copied from a weekday cannot be used for Sunday.
A Sunday journey remains possible, but it should be searched as a bus journey through the operator rather than described as the Bari to Matera train.
How to buy FAL tickets
Tickets are sold through station ticket offices, authorised outlets, the operator's website and its app. Passengers using a conventional ticket must follow the validation rules shown at the station.
The operator also introduced contactless Tap and Go ticketing in 2026. At enabled railway stations, passengers can tap a contactless bank card or compatible phone at the departure reader and tap again on arrival, and the system calculates the fare according to the route.
Contactless ticketing is useful for a straightforward point-to-point journey, but travellers making a coordinated connection should still check that the complete route is covered correctly. Bari Airport to Matera by public transport
There are two principal options from Bari Airport.
Option one: airport train to Bari Centrale, then FAL
Ferrotramviaria operates the railway between Bari Airport and Bari Centrale. The FAL information states that the two station areas at Bari Centrale are connected by a lift and that integrated ticketing is available for journeys between Bari Airport and Matera.
This option works when the airport train and the FAL departure align cleanly, when you prefer rail travel, when you want flexibility around Bari Centrale, and when your flight arrives early enough to absorb delays and baggage collection.
Do not book the tightest theoretical connection. A delayed flight, passport control or a checked bag can remove the saving created by an earlier train.
Option two: the direct airport coach to Matera
Aeroporti di Puglia lists Matera among the destinations served by the Pugliairbus coach network from Bari Airport. This removes the change at Bari Centrale and can be simpler after a flight.
The coach is not automatically faster or more frequent. Compare the actual departure after the flight rather than choosing by transport type alone.
The best airport option is the one that leaves a realistic margin after the scheduled landing time and reaches Matera without a long wait in Bari.
Can you visit Matera as a day trip from Bari
Yes. The restored weekday timetable makes the journey possible in both directions within one day.
A day trip works best when you take an early service, select the return before leaving Bari, concentrate the visit on the Sassi and central Matera, are comfortable with steep streets and a full day on foot, and when the date is not a Sunday or public holiday.
Matera is generally more rewarding with at least one night. The evening removes the pressure to return to the station and allows the city to be seen after many day visitors have left.

What to do if the final connection is missed
Do not assume that another train will leave within a few minutes. Check the operator's app immediately and compare the next railway itinerary, a replacement bus service, the airport coach if travelling from the airport, and a private transfer as the last practical alternative.
Travellers holding separate Trenitalia and FAL tickets should not assume that a missed FAL departure will be protected automatically after a delay on the national railway.
