Recco Sagra del Fuoco 2026: The Two-Night Programme and How to Plan It

Recco's Sagra del Fuoco is not one firework display at the end of a village festival.

Across 7 and 8 September, the town's seven districts stage separate pyrotechnic performances from the eastern and western piers. The programme also includes a daytime display, a procession, food stands and the traditional mascoli, ground-based explosions whose sound is as important to the celebration as the fireworks above the harbour.

The complete 2026 programme was formally presented in Recco on the morning of 1 September. The Comune di Recco has also published the event map and the attachments for extraordinary trains and buses.

Best night for a first visit: 8 September, both for the complete cultural programme and because it falls outside the announced strike window.

Driving: not recommended unless the accommodation includes confirmed parking outside the restricted centre.

Why this festival is different

The seven Recco districts are Bastia, Collodari, Liceto, Ponte, San Martino, Spiaggia and Verzemma. Each presents its own contribution to the celebration of Our Lady of Suffrage, known locally as the Suffragina.

Six of the districts stage night-time displays across the two principal evenings, while Verzemma presents the daytime show on 8 September. The result is a sequence rather than a single synchronised finale, with each performance beginning after the previous one has ended.

The fireworks are only one part of the festival. The religious ceremonies, district food stands and mascoli explain why attending from the afternoon feels different from arriving beside the harbour five minutes before 23:00.

What are the mascoli

Mascoli are small metal mortars loaded with limited quantities of black powder and arranged along prepared ground. They are connected in lines and patterns so that the explosions accelerate towards a final concentrated sequence known as the riondino.

The official festival history describes the Ligurian practice as a civilian counterpart to military cannon salutes and traces the Recco tradition to the early fifteenth century. Individual sparate can use between approximately one thousand and two thousand five hundred mascoli.

They should not be understood as small decorative fireworks. The principal effect is an intense series of ground-level explosions and an expanding wall of sound.

Ear protection is a sensible precaution for small children and sound-sensitive adults. Bringing a dog into the centre during the sparate is difficult to justify, even when the animal ordinarily tolerates crowds.

Programme for Monday 7 September

09:30: raising of the flags of the committee and the seven districts. 10:00: blessing of children and floral tribute outside the sanctuary.

12:00: district food stands open. 19:30: food stands reopen for the evening. 21:00: First Vespers and Eucharistic blessing.

From 23:00, three displays in sequence. Spiaggia opens with Luigi Di Matteo from the western pier, San Martino follows with Pirotecnica Terracciano and Gerardo Scudo, also from the western pier, and Liceto closes with Martarello Group from the eastern pier.

The three performances follow one another rather than beginning simultaneously. There is no useful reason to leave after the first display unless a fixed return connection requires it.

Programme for Tuesday 8 September

03:30: the districts salute the Virgin with the traditional mascoli. 04:30: dawn Mass at the sanctuary.

Anyone staying in central Recco should expect the festival day to begin audibly long before breakfast. Travellers seeking a normal night's sleep should choose accommodation outside the immediate centre or arrive later in the morning.

11:00: solemn Mass and offering of candles by the districts and the city. 12:00: food stands open. 12:30: Verzemma's mascoli in the riverbed opposite the sanctuary. 13:00: Verzemma's daytime firework display from the western pier.

Daylight fireworks work differently from the night displays. Colour is less dominant, while smoke, rhythm and the physical construction of the sequences become more visible.

19:30: food stands reopen. 20:00: Second Vespers and the solemn procession carrying the Ark of Our Lady of Suffrage through the town.

The procession is accompanied by confraternities, ceremonial crosses, the local philharmonic band and separate mascoli from Collodari, Liceto, Verzemma, Bastia, Spiaggia and Ponte.

From 23:00, the second night of displays. Bastia opens with Piromagia di Salvatore Russo from the eastern pier, Ponte follows with Carmine Lieto from the western pier, and Collodari closes with La Rosa International Fireworks, also from the western pier. San Martino's midnight sparata ends the patronal day.

Should you attend on 7 or 8 September

Choose 7 September for the cleaner one-night plan. The first evening is easier to understand and organise: arrive during the afternoon, eat at the district stands and remain for three consecutive displays from 23:00. There is no daytime procession to coordinate, and visitors staying outside Recco can concentrate on one arrival and one late return. In 2026 that late return is the weak point, because the announced rail strike covers the hours immediately after the first night's displays.

Choose 8 September for the complete festival. The second day contains the elements that make the Sagra del Fuoco more than a firework competition: pre-dawn mascoli, the daytime Verzemma display, the procession and the final midnight sparata. This is the stronger choice for travellers interested in local culture rather than spectacle alone, and it strongly favours an overnight stay. It also finishes after the announced strike window closes at 21:17, which leaves the late return less exposed.

Attend both nights when Recco is the purpose of the trip. A two-night stay allows the displays to be seen without constructing two late journeys along the Ligurian coast. The practical drawback is the 03:30 start on 8 September, which divides the two firework nights with only a short period of quiet.

Where should you watch

The central waterfront gives the most direct relationship between the town, the harbour and the displays from the two piers. It also receives the heaviest concentration of spectators.

Do not walk towards a firing pier simply because it looks closer on a map. Security perimeters, pedestrian diversions and controlled access determine where spectators may stand, and the Comune publishes a dedicated 2026 map showing the firing areas, procession route, emergency points and public facilities.

A useful position should give a reasonably open view across the harbour, distance from the immediate firing and safety areas, an identifiable route back to the railway station or accommodation, enough space to remain through the full sequence, and no dependence on crossing the procession route at a fixed time.

The mistake is continuing to move after the waterfront has filled. Choose an area before 22:00 and remain there.

How early should you arrive

For the 23:00 fireworks, arriving in Recco between 18:00 and 19:00 gives enough time to understand the road closures, locate the station and have dinner before the waterfront reaches its greatest density.

On 8 September, arrive earlier when the procession is part of the plan. Food stands reopen at 19:30 and the procession begins at 20:00, leaving little room for a late meal before the ceremonial route becomes active.

Travelling by train

The train is normally the strongest option for visitors staying along the Ligurian rail corridor. In 2026 it needs one extra check before anything else.

A national rail strike has been announced from 21:18 on Monday 7 September until 21:17 on Tuesday 8 September. The first night's fireworks begin at 23:00 on 7 September, so the entire return journey after them sits inside that window. The second night's displays begin after the window has closed.

Strike notices carry exclusions, and the Comune has announced extraordinary services, so the two do not automatically cancel each other out. What cannot be assumed is protection: the guaranteed minimum bands that apply to regional services on a working day do not extend past midnight, so a late return on 7 September is the journey most exposed to disruption. The Comune confirms that extraordinary trains and additional buses will operate during the firework evenings, and its event page carries the current downloadable attachments. Use the current attachment rather than a timetable copied from a previous edition, and confirm the individual train against the operator's own strike page before relying on it.

Check the date, because 7 and 8 September may have different services. Check the direction of the final train, whether it stops at your chosen town, the station departure time rather than the approximate end of the fireworks, and any connection required after Genoa or another interchange.

The displays begin at 23:00 and continue in sequence. A train shortly after midnight may require leaving before the full programme has ended.

Extra buses and road restrictions

The 1 September presentation confirmed six additional bus journeys as well as extraordinary trains. Exact times should be taken from the Comune's current attachments rather than from a secondary report. The additional buses also matter more than usual on the first night, because road transport is not covered by the announced railway action.

Parking limitations and changes to pedestrian and vehicle routes will apply, and the normal Monday market on 7 September has been cancelled as part of the event arrangements.

Driving into the centre without a confirmed parking plan is the weakest arrival strategy. Navigation applications may show roads that are temporarily closed or accessible only to authorised traffic.

Where should you stay

Stay in Recco when attending both nights or when the complete 8 September programme matters. It removes the need to reach a station immediately after midnight and makes the daytime events easier to attend.

Camogli, Genoa and other railway-connected coastal bases can work for a single evening, but only when the published special train serves the selected stop. Do not book a nearby town first and investigate the night service later.

A property within the centre will experience the event at full intensity, including the 03:30 mascoli. Accommodation farther from the centre may provide more sleep but require a longer late-night walk.

Food stands and the Recco experience

The district stands open at 12:00 and 19:30 on both main days. They are not merely generic festival catering: the seven quartieri use food, volunteers and local identity as part of their presence across the celebration.

Eat before the final hour leading into the fireworks. Waiting until 22:30 creates a choice between joining a food queue and protecting a waterfront position.

A practical two-night plan

7 September. Arrive and check in during the afternoon, walk between the station, sanctuary and waterfront before restrictions intensify, eat at one of the district stands from 19:30, choose a viewing area before 22:00 and watch all three displays from 23:00.

8 September. Attend the 03:30 mascoli only when the ritual is a central reason for the trip, rest during the morning or attend the religious programme, then see Verzemma's mascoli and daytime fireworks from 12:30.

Leave time away from the waterfront during the afternoon, return before the 20:00 procession, and remain for the three displays from 23:00 and the midnight finale.

What remains subject to change

Firework events depend on safety conditions, municipal instructions and operational decisions. Check the Comune di Recco and the official Sagra del Fuoco pages again on the day of travel.

The city has also announced an environmental trial using a collection net in the water near the western pier to recover plastic fragments and other material released during the displays.
