Choose eastern Sicily if it is your first trip
Eastern Sicily and the south-east are the easiest first choice for many international travellers. This side gives you Taormina, Etna, Siracusa, Ortigia, Noto, Modica, Ragusa and access to coast, wine, history and baroque towns.
Best for first-time visitors, couples, honeymoons, classic Sicily routes and food and culture.
Avoid if you mainly want Palermo, the Egadi islands or a less obvious route.

Choose western Sicily for a more layered trip
Western Sicily feels different. It gives you Palermo, Cefalu, Trapani, Erice, Marsala, the Egadi islands and a more city, market and island rhythm.
Best for repeat visitors, food lovers, markets, island days and travellers who want Palermo.
Avoid if you want the easiest first Sicily itinerary, or you want Taormina and Noto.
Can you do east and west in one trip?
Yes, but not in a rushed week. With 10 to 14 days, you can combine east and west if you accept some longer drives and build the route properly. With 7 days, choose one side.
Best first Sicily itinerary
For most first-time travellers: Taormina for two nights, the Etna area for one or two nights, Siracusa and Ortigia for two nights, then Noto or the south-east for two nights. This gives a strong mix of views, food, wine, coast and towns without trying to cover the whole island.
Best western Sicily itinerary
For a western route: Palermo for two or three nights, Cefalu for one or two nights, the Trapani or Erice area for two nights, then the Egadi islands or Marsala for two nights. This route is better for travellers who want markets, islands and a less polished version of Sicily.
