Formentor 2026: Mallorca’s most famous drive now requires a plan

Cap de Formentor is one of the easiest places in Mallorca to underestimate.

On a map, it looks simple. A road, a lighthouse, a beach, a few viewpoints, a northern peninsula that seems close enough to fit between breakfast and lunch.

In reality, Formentor is not a casual summer drive anymore.

For 2026, traffic on the Ma-2210 road to Formentor is regulated from 15 May to 18 October, between 10:00 and 22:00. The restrictions affect the route from Port de Pollença toward Formentor Beach and the lighthouse, with different rules depending on the section of road.

That does not make Formentor less worth visiting.

It means you have to stop treating it like an ordinary viewpoint.

What is restricted in 2026

There are two key sections.

The first section runs toward Formentor Beach. Private vehicles can access the beach parking area only while capacity is available. Once the parking is full, access is closed and restricted to authorised vehicles.

The second section runs from Formentor Beach toward the lighthouse. During restricted hours, this section is only for authorised vehicles, public transport, cyclists, hikers and specific permitted categories. Private vehicles without authorisation are not allowed.

This distinction is important.

Many visitors hear about the Formentor restrictions and assume they can still drive most of the way and improvise. That is the wrong mindset. In summer, you should assume the road will punish improvisation.

The biggest mistake

The mistake is not wanting to see Formentor.

The mistake is trying to see it in the middle of the day with a rental car, no timing plan and a vague idea that there will be somewhere to park.

That is how a beautiful Mallorca morning becomes a queue.

The official Formentor information recommends public transport, and line 334 connects Alcúdia and Port de Pollença with the Formentor peninsula, stopping at Mirador del Colomer, Formentor Beach, Cala Figuera-Cala Murta and the lighthouse.

For most travellers, that is the realistic answer.

Not the romantic answer, perhaps. But the realistic one.

Should you go before 10:00?

Possibly, but be careful.

The lighthouse section requires vehicles that entered before restricted hours to be out before the restriction begins. DGT guidance states that vehicles accessing before 10:00 must be at least past the relevant control point by 9:58 to avoid sanction.

In plain English: do not think you can sneak in at 9:45, take your time, and drive back when you feel like it.

If you want a sunrise drive, leave properly early. If you are not an early person, do not build the trip around a fantasy version of yourself.

Mallorca has many ways to be beautiful. Formentor is not worth starting the day with a fine.

The smarter way to visit

Choose one of three versions.

The first version is public transport. Stay in or near Port de Pollença, take the TIB bus, accept the structure, and enjoy the peninsula without parking stress.

The second version is early morning. Leave before the island wakes up, understand the exit rules, and keep the visit clean. This can work well for photographers, couples and travellers who actually enjoy dawn.

The third version is a private driver or authorised transfer, especially if you are staying in a higher-end hotel or villa and want comfort without self-driving anxiety. This is not always necessary, but it is often better than renting a car and pretending Mallorca is empty.

What you should avoid is the fourth version: casual rental-car tourism at noon.

That version belongs to another era.

Where to base yourself

Port de Pollença is the most practical base for Formentor. It puts you close to the road, the bus route and the northern coastline. Pollença old town is better if you want charm, dinners and a more inland rhythm. Alcúdia can work for families and logistics, though it has a different atmosphere. Deià and Sóller are beautiful, but they are not convenient bases for a Formentor-focused day.

If you are staying in Palma, Formentor is still possible, but it should be treated as a planned excursion, not a spontaneous idea after breakfast.

Mallorca is larger than many visitors admit.

The island looks easy until the summer traffic starts.

What Formentor is really telling travellers

Formentor's restrictions are part of a larger European travel shift.

The most beautiful places are no longer willing to absorb unlimited cars simply because visitors want the view. Capri, Cinque Terre, the Amalfi Coast, Lake Como, Ibiza, Marseille's Calanques and now Formentor all point in the same direction: access is becoming managed.

That is not a tragedy. It is a warning.

A better trip will belong to people who plan lightly but intelligently. Not overplanned. Not neurotic. Just honest about limits.
