Dolomites in Winter Without a Car: Where to Stay, How to Move and What to Avoid
Dolomites in winter without a car: lifts open on 4 December 2026 and the 2027 bus timetables start on 13 December. Which of the four bases work best, and why.
The main Dolomites ski areas open on 4 December 2026, and most can be reached without a car.
Not all of it, and not at every hour. Buses into the valleys stop in the evening, Cortina has fewer links than South Tyrol, and the 2027 bus timetables only begin on 13 December 2026, nine days after the main ski areas open.
This guide covers the four bases that work by train and bus in winter 2026-27, how long each transfer takes on the official timetables, which passes cover what, and the mistakes that turn a car-free ski week into a week spent at bus stops.
Quick answer
Season: Val Gardena, Alta Badia and Val di Fassa open on 4 December 2026 and are scheduled to run until 4 April 2027. Kronplatz and Cortina have not yet published their dates.
Best base without a car: Val Gardena. Buses from Bolzano and Bressanone reach Ortisei in just under an hour, and the guest pass covers the valley buses.
Closest to train-to-lift: Kronplatz, where the Ried gondola leaves from Perca station on the Val Pusteria line.
Alta Badia: bus 460 from Brunico to Corvara, twice an hour, about 68 minutes.
Cortina: a booked coach from Venice twice a day, or the train to Calalzo and bus 30, which on Sundays and public holidays runs only three times each way.
Ski pass: an adult Dolomiti Superski day pass costs eighty-nine euros in high season and eighty euros in normal season.
The trap: a late flight. The last bus from Bolzano to Val Gardena leaves at 19:28.
When the 2026-27 season runs
Val Gardena and the Sellaronda open on 4 December 2026 and are scheduled to run until 4 April 2027. Alta Badia gives the same dates, with the Lagazuoi cable car running from 5 December to 3 April. Val di Fassa also lists its main ski areas as open from 4 December to 4 April.
Kronplatz and Cortina have not yet published their 2026-27 opening dates. The Dolomiti Superski price list starts the season on 28 November, but warns that lifts will not necessarily be running in every valley from that date.
The season splits into price periods. High season runs from 20 December to 9 January and from 31 January to 20 March. The weeks before 20 December are normal season, and they carry the one offer that changes the sums.
The Dolomiti Superpremière gives four nights and four ski pass days for the price of three, or eight for the price of six, from the start of the season until 19 December 2026. It only applies to stays at participating accommodation, which supplies the voucher, and the last day to buy the pass is 16 December.
The official 2026-27 prices put an adult day pass at eighty-nine euros in high season and a six-day pass at four hundred and fifty-three euros. In normal season the same passes cost eighty and four hundred and seven euros.
Val Gardena: the easiest base without a car
Val Gardena has two bus routes from the Brenner railway, and both run well into spring. From 13 December 2026, bus 350 leaves Bolzano bus station every hour at 28 minutes past and reaches Ortisei in 57 minutes. Bus 360 starts at Bressanone station and takes 59 minutes to Ortisei, roughly once an hour.
The catch is the evening. The last 350 leaves Bolzano at 19:28, and the last 360 leaves Bressanone bus station at 19:53. A flight that lands in Verona or Venice in the late afternoon can miss both. Plan the flight around them.
Inside the valley, the ski buses and the Gröden Express start on 4 December, although two of the Gröden Express lines only begin on 22 December and one stops on 13 March. Tickets for lines 352, 353 and 354 are sold online only, never on board, and every ticket, guest pass included, has to be validated each time you board.
The Val Gardena Guest Pass covers all public buses in the valley except the Nightbus and the Monte Pana and Saltria bus, plus most public transport across South Tyrol. It does not cover long-distance trains such as Frecciarossa or Italo, and it is valid from 00:00 on the day of arrival to 23:59 on the day of departure.
Ortisei is the base to choose, because both routes from the railway serve it directly and the transfer is a single bus.
Kronplatz: from the train to the gondola
Of the four bases in this guide, Kronplatz is the one where the railway does most of the work. Trains on the Brenner line connect at Fortezza with the Val Pusteria line, and at Perca station you can step straight into a cabin of the Ried gondola.
Brunico has the valley's main train and bus stations, which makes it a practical base for anyone who wants every connection in one place.
The Kronplatz Guest Pass gives unlimited use of the ski buses in the Val Pusteria and San Vigilio area and of public transport across South Tyrol, regional trains included. It also covers the Ski Pustertal Express, the train that links Kronplatz with the 3 Zinnen Dolomites ski area in 35 minutes, which the ski pass does not include.
The gap is the calendar. Kronplatz has not yet published its 2026-27 lift dates, so do not commit to an early-season week there until it does.
Alta Badia: plan around the bus
Alta Badia has no railway. The link is bus 460 from Brunico station to Corvara, daily from 13 December 2026. The first bus leaves Brunico at 05:35, then they run at 5 and 35 minutes past the hour, and the journey takes about 68 minutes.
The last bus from Brunico leaves at 21:05 and reaches Corvara at 22:12. Miss it and the night is spent in Brunico. In the other direction, the last bus that reaches Brunico leaves Corvara at 20:47.
In the valley, the 466 ski buses link Corvara and Colfosco from 3 December to 6 April. The guest pass, free to guests of member hotels, covers all buses in Alta Badia and the surrounding area, ski buses included, except the ski bus in Badia.
Corvara is the base to pick. Bus 460 ends there, so the transfer from Brunico is one ride with no change.
Cortina: two ways in, both with conditions
Cortina d'Ampezzo is the Dolomites name most travellers know, and the base that needs the most planning without a car.
The direct option is the coach from Venice. Dolomiti Bus line 72, run in partnership with Cortina Express, leaves Piazzale Roma at 06:20 and 18:20, calls at Mestre station and then at Venice airport at 07:00 and 19:00, and reaches the Cortina Scuole stop at 09:30 and 21:30. Booking on cortinaexpress.it is compulsory, and there is no service on 25 December. Book it early.
The coach back leaves Cortina at 07:00 and 14:30. That second time shapes the last day: an evening flight home from Venice still means the early-afternoon coach.
ATVO also runs a Venice to Cortina service, calling at Piazzale Roma, Mestre, Marco Polo airport and Treviso, again with compulsory booking.
The rail option ends at Calalzo, reached by train from Treviso via Belluno. From there, bus 30 takes 55 minutes to Cortina. On paper it is frequent, with 18 runs each way, but 15 of them run on working days only. On Sundays and public holidays three buses each way remain, the last leaving Calalzo at 18:35.
The holiday timetable for bus 30, covering 24 December to 5 January, has not been published yet. Nor have the 2026-27 rules for Cortina's ski buses, which in winter 2025-26 were free for ski pass holders.
Getting there from Venice, Verona and Milan
For Val Gardena, Kronplatz and Alta Badia, the way in is the Brenner railway through Verona and Bolzano. Italo runs to Bolzano from Verona, Bologna, Florence and Rome. From Milan or Venice, plan on reaching Verona first and continuing north. Verona is the hinge.
For Cortina, the way in is Venice: the booked coaches from the city and the airport, or the train through Treviso to Calalzo.
Two seasonal airport shuttles serve specific areas. Val di Fassa's Fly Ski Shuttle, which serves airports including Verona, runs on Saturdays and Sundays from 19 December to 29 March, at fifty euros one way for an adult, with online booking compulsory by 08:00 on the Friday before. Arabba's transfer runs from Venice and Treviso every Saturday and Sunday from 5 December to 4 April, but only for guests of its partner hotels.
Trains and buses switch to new timetables on 13 December, and South Tyrol's 2027 train timetables have not been published yet. Check any December journey again a week before travelling. If the Dolomites are one stop on a longer trip, our guide to where to stay in Italy helps place them in the route.
Which pass covers what
Do not assume the ski pass covers transport. Dolomiti Superski notes that some connections between ski areas rely on paid buses or trains.
In the three South Tyrol bases, the local guest pass is the way to move around, and in Alta Badia it comes free with member hotels. Ask before booking whether the accommodation takes part.
Without a guest pass, the Mobilcard covers public transport across South Tyrol for one, three or seven consecutive days, at twenty-two, thirty-two and fifty-two euros for an adult. Like the guest passes, it is not valid on long-distance trains such as Italo or the Frecciargento.
Cortina is a different system. It sits in the Veneto, outside the South Tyrol network, so none of these passes applies there.
The mistake to avoid
Do not book the flight before checking the last bus. A morning landing makes every base easy, while an evening landing can leave you in Bolzano, Brunico or Calalzo for the night.
The cut-offs come early. The last 350 leaves Bolzano at 19:28 and the last 360 leaves Bressanone at 19:53. Bus 460 runs later, until 21:05 from Brunico. The evening coach to Cortina leaves Venice airport at 19:00, and there is none on 25 December.
The second trap is the calendar. A trip that starts before 13 December and ends after it runs across two timetables, so check the return journey against the 2027 timetable, not the one used to plan the outward trip.
